The Georgia Standards of Excellence in ELA are both broad and complex. This professional learning opportunity will encourage teachers to identify both the rigor and thoroughness of teaching and assessing multiple genres of writing required in grades 6-8.
Using the Achievement Level Descriptors, GSE, and exemplary writing pieces, participants will first examine skills needed to grow proficient writers in all genres. Using the ALD’s participants will then explore how to identify small groups of students with similar needs in order to intentionally plan mini-lessons designed to encourage growth in the various genres.
Please note: Participants need to bring student data that will allow them to note both strengths and weaknesses of the students. Also, participants are encouraged to bring at least one exemplar writing piece from each genre (narrative, opinion/argumentative, and informational/explanatory).
Target Audience: Grades 6-8 ELA and Reading teachers, co-teachers, ESL teachers, intervention specialists, instructional coaches, administrators
