Making the Standards for Mathematical Practice Visible: For Administrators Only

Administrators have been asking, “What should I see in a mathematics classroom during the 2019-2020 school year?” First District RESA mathematics consultants are ready to answer that question. We have a deep conviction that improving student achievement begins with equipping administrators with the necessary tools to support their teachers in improving student achievement.
“The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important processes and proficiencies with longstanding importance in mathematics education.” GaDOE Grade Level Overviews
John Hattie’s Visible Learning research synthesized findings from 1,500 meta-analyses of 90,000 studies involving 300 million students, into what works best in education. In this session administrators will learn how to implement the Standards for Mathematical Practice using strategies based on Hattie’s effect size research found in Visible Learning for Mathematics. Participants with little or no mathematics background will leave with the tools needed to identify effective mathematics instruction in any grade.
This mathematics professional learning series will continue with an offering for instructional coaches followed by a session for teachers. The completion of the series by all parties should help schools develop common understandings and expectations for the mathematics program.
